Introduction

With the standard installation of Associate Engine, search results are based on amazon.com. Associate Engine can be configured to base search results on amazon.co.uk. For a live example of results based on amazon.co.uk, see http://www.grandshop.co.uk

See also the amazonid.* configuration variables. They let you add links for the international Amazon associate programs to your amazon.com based search results. This lets you keep the focus on amazon.com products but also have links to the international Amazon associate programs such as amazon.co.uk. If this is all that you want, then you do not have to install a second installation of Associate Engine; just set the appropriate amazonid.* configuration variables.

Installation

Installing Associate Engine for use with amazon.co.uk is essentially the same as installing it for use with amazon.com.

If you want to display results for both amazon.co.uk and for amazon.com then you will need to install Associate Engine twice on your webserver, such as /cgi-bin/ae.pl and /cgi-bin/uk/ae.pl (Note: you can use any directory name and any filename).

Depending upon whether you want to use both amazon.co.uk and amazon.com (on the same webite), or only amazon.co.uk, follow the appropriate instructions below.

Dual Installation on your website : amazon.co.uk and amazon.com

Basically, you will install Associate Engine twice. One installation (e.g.: /cgi-bin/ae.pl) will be for amazon.com, and the other installation (e.g.: /cgi-bin/uk/ae.pl) will be for amazon.co.uk. The steps for dual installation are:

  1. If you have not already done so, request an ae-key.txt file for your amazon.co.uk associate ID by submitting the Key Request form. This key file will be different from the key file for your amazon.com associate ID.

  2. The standard installation puts Associate Engine at /cgi-bin/ae.pl Decide where you want the installation for amazon.com to be located, and where you want the installation for amazon.co.uk to be located. The two installation must be put at two different locations. Here are some suggested locations: (these are suggestions; you can use any directory and filename)

    amazon.com installation:

    /cgi-bin/us/ae.pl
    /cgi-bin/ae-us.pl
    /cgi-bin/ae.pl

    amazon.co.uk installation:

    /cgi-bin/uk/ae.pl
    /cgi-bin/ae-uk.pl
    /cgi-bin/ae.pl

Note: You cannot name both installations with the same name, e.g.: /cgi-bin/ae.pl

  3. Associate Engine installation for amazon.com:

Note: If you already have Associate Engine v3.06.27 (or higher) already installed and configured to work with amazon.com, then you can skip this step entirely and go to the next step.

    1. If you're going to install Associate Engine (for amazon.com) into a sub-directory, then following the instructions for Installing in a Subdirectory; otherwise, follow the standard installation instructions.

    2. Put your ae-key.txt file for your amazon.com associate ID into the same directory where you just installed ae.pl

    3. If you want to use the store templates, then edit ae-ini.txt and set template.dir to "ae-template/store"

  4. Associate Engine installation for amazon.co.uk:

    1. If you're going to install Associate Engine (for amazon.co.uk) into a sub-directory, then following the instructions for Installing in a Subdirectory; otherwise, follow the standard installation instructions.

    2. Put your ae-key.txt file for your amazon.co.uk associate ID into the same directory where you just installed ae.pl

      STOP

If you are waiting for your ae-key.txt file for your amazon.co.uk associate ID, you can continue testing without the ae-key.txt file by editing ae-ini.txt and setting:

      locale uk

You must add this setting otherwise results will be based on amazon.com rather than amazon.co.uk

    3. If you want to use the store templates, then edit ae-ini.txt and set template.dir to "ae-template/store-uk"

    4. If you are using a version of Associate Engine that is less than v5.11.01, then edit ae-ini.txt and set:

      addto.graphics no
      addto.buyfrom no

Note: These two settings are necessary, otherwise, you will see "Buy from Amazon.com" buttons even for amazon.co.uk. Associate Engine v5.11.01 (and higher) automatically sets these variables for you.

  5. Access each installation of Associate Engine in your web browser (e.g.: www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl and www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/uk/ae.pl). If you have ae-key.txt files, ensure that the appropriate associate ID appear in each installation.

Single Installation on your website : only amazon.co.uk

The steps for single installation are:

  1. If you have not already done so, request an ae-key.txt file for your amazon.co.uk associate ID by submitting the Key Request form.

  2. Follow the standard installation instructions.

  5. Access Associate Engine in your web browser (e.g.: www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl). If you have an ae-key.txt file, ensure that your associate ID appears.
